The IntelliDriveSM Vision is to bring connectivity to the U.S. surface transportation system through the application of powerful advanced wireless technologies—which can enable transformative change. Imagine...

  • A system in which highway crashes and their tragic consequences are rare because vehicles of all types can sense and communicate the events and hazards around them.
  • A fully-connected, information-rich environment in which travelers, transit riders, freight managers, system operators, and other users are aware of all aspects of the system’s performance.
  • A surface transportation system in which travelers have comprehensive and accurate information on travel options—transit travel times, schedules, costs, and real-time locations; driving travel times, routes, and travel costs; parking costs, availability, and space reservation information; and the environmental footprint of each trip.
  • A surface transportation system where the system operators have full knowledge of the status of every transportation asset.
  • A highway system in which vehicles of all types can communicate with traffic signals to eliminate unnecessary stops, and to help drivers operate their vehicles to maximize fuel efficiency and to minimize emissions.
  • A highway system in which vehicles can communicate the status of all vehicle operating systems and provide information that can be used by travelers and system operators to mitigate the vehicle’s impact on the environment or to make more informed choices about travel modes.

The IntelliDriveSM vision is to provide the nation with a connected multi-modal surface transportation system that enables communications among vehicles of all types; the infrastructure; and portable devices. IntelliDriveSM will serve the American public by leveraging technology to maximize surface transportation safety, mobility, and environmental performance.

To make this vision a reality, stakeholders are coming together to define ways to collaborate to foster research and develop new markets. By enabling wireless connectivity among vehicles, the roadway, and with portable devices, IntelliDriveSM has the potential to transform the surface transportation system’s performance in terms of safety, mobility, and environmental impacts in our lifetimes.
