Tolling & E-Payments
IntelliDriveSM on-board equipment (OBE) will be designed to provide the option for vehicle owners to make convenient wireless payments for highway trip expenses such as tolls and parking fees, or even private sector goods and services such as gasoline or take-away meals. Systems can be designed to protect users' personal information and billing details. Vehicle owners will need to explicitly "opt in" to the tolling and e-payments services because of the inherent privacy and billing issues.
In the future, motorists who want the convenience of electronic payment no longer would have to purchase toll tags, and toll operators could eliminate the need to purchase or inventory transponders.
Next generation tolling and e-payments will offer benefits to service providers as well. Eventually, when IntelliDriveSM is fully implemented, manual toll collection could be phased out. Development of vehicle-infrastructure connectivity is likely to foster the interoperability of electronic payment systems, which could lower costs and increase efficiency.
