Policy Roadmap

Effective deployment of IntelliDriveSM will require new policies, and, potentially, new regulations to establish institutional foundations, catalyze deployment and markets, and manage risks.

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s (DOT’s) Draft IntelliDriveSM Policy and Institutional Issues Research Plan | HTML structures a comprehensive research agenda to achieve these goals:

  • Enable a successful and sustainable deployment of IntelliDrive;
  • Address institutional issues; and
  • Provide options for a policy foundation.
The plan objectives include:
  • Identifying and building on existing research and development activities by DOT and others;
  • Identifying the gaps, and describing new and needed research;
  • Developing a set of alternative scenarios that
    • Describe an appropriate policy and institutional foundation for IntelliDriveSM;
    • Identify ways to stimulate the market that will sustain IntelliDriveSM in the future; and
    • Foster collaboration among public, private, and other partners.
The plan is organized into five activity tracks:

The first track will develop system descriptions or deployment scenarios. The research that follows will be based on the descriptions and scenarios developed in Track 1. Tracks 2, 3, and 4 will analyze the major issues that need to be considered in order to develop a set of alternative deployment scenarios for consideration by stakeholders:

  • Investment Models
  • Governance Models
  • Institutional Issues

The final track (Track 5) involves:

  • comparing the alternative scenarios for strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and risks
  • trade-off analysis; and
  • recommendations development.
